Kultur 1

It's strange to me that the German-American subculture has slightly died within America, especially coming from a German-American family, my dad being a German. However, when I think about it, Kathleen Couzen was right saying that it has been submerged. My dad has said that his entire life nothing has really changed because being a German wasn't as bad as being, at some points, other races. So really, as strange as it is, it is also apparently obvious that this would happen.

However, it is shocking that German is the most prominent with 15% of the people in the US saying they are German decent with only 9% saying they are African-American. Although, this is probably because it is much easier for our eyes to pick out an African-American on a daily basis than we can pick out a German. The only real way to know if someone is from Germany is when they speak they tend to have a problem pronouncing English W sounds since their W sounds like a V. Other than that, if two people are of German decent, it's much harder to tell than if two people were of African-American decent.

It's also surprising to hear that German's were the ones to really push gymnastics in our country. Especially since we won two of the three gold medals in the 2008 Olympics, which can be seen in this wikipedia article.

However, after reading this the most prevalent fact that I have seen is that German immigrants, as early as the 1860's were separating in religion, being a part of almost every major Christian denomination. This really shows how the German culture could get spread so easily. Most other nationalities, when coming to the USA, would keep to one religion and usually stay within their own boundaries. However, since the German people were the ones who branched out, consequently, maybe part of their heritage was removed. But, we could look at the glass half full and say that their heritage just becoming the longest and deepest in the American society.
