Kultur 1

I found the way that German culture was adopted into American culture  to be interesting. It seems like most things that were supposed to be culturally German were watered down in American culture. This is definitely what I would think would happen. German culture had to go through changes to fit into American culture. For example, Milwaukee is famous for beer and bratwurst sausage. This is in connection to the Germanic origins of the town. However, today beer and brats have simply become a part of the local culture, and the German origins are not acknowledged.

There was also a section about New Glarus, Wisconsin. This section talked about how the town was originally settled by Swiss German immigrants, and where the town is today as a result. The town was just like any other town until it started to bring German festivals back and actually participating in the settlers cultural tendencies. This would eventually give rise to the conversion of the whole town into a "little Switzerland." This is also a blend of the Swiss and American culture. Swiss culture as in the Swiss food, building style, and traditional stories. And the American culture comes in with the tourism aspect. I have at least seen a cultural tendency in America for making money on anything, and also tourism. In Michigan, there is a little "German-town" called Frankenmuth. This is another similar example of a town like New Glarus.

As a sidenote, I thought the German fascination with the Native Americans was funny and interesting.
