For AMD2, I decided to learn more about a german author by the name of Kurt Tucholsky.
He was born in 1890, and died at the young age of 45, in 1935. During his lifetime much of his work was centered around the political movements of his time. First he was a proponent of the democratic Weimar Republic. He wrote countless articles in newspapers and magazines criticizing a large number of politicians of his time. Not only did he attack right-wing politicians who he did not agree with on many things, but he also attacked many left-wing politicians for being to lenient on their opponents. During the time of the Weimar Republic he was a very controversial writer, loved by scholars, and hated by politicians.
His popularity began to decline with the come of the 1930's along with the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the ascension of the Nazi party. He permanently moved to Sweden in fear of falling into Nazi hands. A move which he later regretted and felt as though he had abandoned an old friend. The stronger the Nazi party became in Germany, the less Tucholsky felt he had any ties to the country. In 1933 the Nazis closed down his old magazine, burned his books, and expatriated him. He realized that many germans had accepted Hitler's rule, along with other countries. With this, he finally accepted that his calls for human rights and democracy had fallen on to deaf ears, and that he no longer should continue his work in this area for it was a meaningless endeavor, and correctly predicted that a large war was soon to come. Shortly after this, he died due to an overdose of sleeping tablets.
